Recovering Metabolic Health
The metabolic revolution rolls on. Myths and Facts Regarding Low-Carbohydrate Diets, published in the journal Nutrients (17, March 2025), explains:
Low-carbohydrate diets have been studied for nearly three decades, with papers on clinical trials now numbering in the thousands [2,3]. These trials have demonstrated significant benefits for the prevention and treatment of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and mental health disorders, among many other chronic diseases [4]
So if reducing carbohydrates provides significant benefits, helping prevent (or reverse) chronic diseases, why isn’t this the first recommendation from doctors, nutritionists, and public health officials? And why isn’t this a leading health care reform proposed by debate student? (See post: Reform Standard of Care for Obesity, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease
The answer is that most doctors and nutritionists remain unconvinced. They weren’t taught about the health benefits of reducing carbohydrates, or about metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance). They were taught that saturated fats and high cholesterol were bad and contribute to cardiovascular disease, the number cause of death.
Here is interview with Dr. David Unwin, a GP in UK. His practice has helped 150 patients but their type 2 diabetes into remission. Yet as Dr. Unwin says “worldwide most doctors think of diabetes as a chronic deteriorating condition…”
